"The Third level"

Flash memories

" Her project continuously develops search for synthesis between contemporarychoreography and art, presenting here the tendency originating in joint projects by J.Cage, M.Cunningham and R. Rauchenberg. Working actively with video, the artiste from St Petersburg in her project «Inside I’m dancing» took
upon herself organising choreography of space. Performers Maya Popova and Artem Ignatyev act as her antipodes. From either side of the screen the videoartist and dancers pleasurably disorientate the spectator in the crystal ball of modern culture.

The installation "Flash Memory" articulates childhood memories, early
cognitive remembrance and unconscious pre-birth recollections: videos
are cornered into the gallery space, as chaotic and twisted film
assembles, to flicker randomly, and fabrics are hanging from nylon
strings, as flags, sails and laundry, to capture, develop and organize

An interview with Viktoria Ilyushkina, in which the artist talks about the project, prepared by

curator Olesia Turkina

The title of the project – “Third level” – sounds quite provoking for an art exhibition. It refers

either to a computer game or to esoteric practice, which in reality it has nothing to do with. So

what does it really mean here?

The title of the video installation emerged from a real sensation, I experienced during my travel

in the Himalayas. It amazed me that, when you find yourself just in front of the mountain you

can see it as a whole. It seems you are just about to mount and conquer it. But on your way up

you realize that it is only the beginning of your way, not the end of it. And that you are

approaching new space, a new level, and you can see the next spot, the next summit. You

continue on your way, and the story repeats from the very beginning. Third level is never the

last one even in a computer game, where there are at least twenty five levels (in the classical

version). Third level is just in the beginning of your way, it’s a stop. “Third level” is related to the

path the pilgrims have to follow heading to the source of the Gang and the Jamuni – two sisterrivers

in the Himalayas. It was a very unusual trip for me. Going up the mountains, one has to

surmount one’s own weaknesses first of all. One has to concentrate on one’s physical condition.

Thoughts follow body movements. Inhale-exhale – at every step. That is not only a journey in

physical reality, but, first of all, a journey deep down oneself.

Entering the exhibition, the spectator has to pass through a vertical projection of pouring down

waters of the Gang. Does this symbolize an idea of ablution; is it a metaphor of purification?

An image of a waterfall is one of the images of eternal movement, of circulation. I tried to

visualize the idea of circulation. For example, in the projection of mountains I have a specially

made shift. Mountains suddenly start moving. It looks like an optic hallucination and

simultaneously represents the idea of endless movement. All these spiral ascents up the

mountain roads are the same kind of circulation.

Memories of Red

. “ Not in Trendy”, 2014, exhibition, Gislaveds Konsthall, SwedenMy art lies beyond what you call trends or order of the day. My art is personal, it is based on my own memories, on the things dear to me, looking back at the memory of my ancestors and my family. Old photographs serve as a starting point for my artwork. I am intrigued and mesmerized by the moments that remain frozen in time and trigger memories. In the modern world everything changes at a growing speed and new technical solutions constantly replace the older ones. This is why I/m trying to invest everything I know, all the classical perceptions of light, color and composition into moving images of my videos. Together with chorographer Maya Popova I shoot my performances with a camera, an later transform the reality when cutting the film.

Apple of my eye

The name of the personal project of Victoria Ilyushkina - APPLE OF MY EYE - English idiom, which can be translated as "the most precious". At the same time, the literal meaning of the phrase directly refers us to the physiology of the vision - an essential process of learning about the world, composing our visual memory. Mechanical fixing of reality (which appeared since the creation of the first camera in 1839 and to date a total of popular photo social networks), on the one hand, given the ability to instantly capture "in memory" selected moments of life, on the other - often become a substitute for the very visual experience which has become a reflex shutter is released. The exhibition by Victoria Ilyushkina at ART re.FLEX Gallery is the personal analysis of the artist 's own creativity, in which photographs from the family chronicle are painted and printed on fabric performance is transformed into a dance video, footage of which already appear in the static in the form of black-and- white prints of images. The apparent experiment of art criticism of the artist, however, deprived of dry games and multimedia, primarily addressed to the phenomena of visual perception and visual experience of space and time.
